Systematics

The species treatment is to be understood in a wide sense. Plants named A. rubrovittatum traditionally differ morphologically from the Aegean taxon. In fact, there is a morphological continuum comprising rubrovittatum auct. and typical curtum, a rather rare taxon of sandy beaches in the E part of Cyprus. Two chromosome races have been identified so far.
Mathew (1996) did not accept A. rubrovittatum for Cyprus. A. curtum is still in urgent need for an area-wide revision. Not many substantial results have been added since Mathew's critical summary and his preliminary subspecific treatment.
