Description

Monoecious, glabrescent or hairy annual, 20-60 cm. Stems prostrate, branching, flexuous, densely leafy, whitish-green or sometimes purplish-red. Leaves usually small, up to 3 x 1 cm, petiolate, often crowded, obovate or oblong-lanceolate, cuneate at base almost obtuse and shortly mucronate at apex, with whitish nerves. Glomerules axillary, dense, green or red, overtopped by leaves. Bracteoles about 1.5 mm, distinctly shorter than perianth, almost scarious, ovate-lanceolate, tapering-mucronulate. Tepals 4-5, about 2.5 mm, all or some as long as or longer than fruit, oblong-lanceolate, acute or acuminate, those of pistillate flowers unequal. Fruit dehiscent, about 2 mm long, more or less ovoid, shortly 3-beaked, almost smooth, greenish, sometimes reddish. Seeds about 1.5 mm, sublenticular, acute at margin, black, shining.
